What this test covers

Federal law prescribes the knowledge areas a CDL applicant must be tested on. This bank is organized by them, and each practice test draws proportionally across all of them rather than sampling at random.

How many questions are on the real General Knowledge test?

Test length is set by your state within the federal framework, so it varies — commonly around 50 for General Knowledge. What doesn't vary is the passing score: 80%, federally, everywhere. Confirm the question count with your state licensing agency.

Who has to take the General Knowledge test?

Every CDL applicant.

Can I retake it if I fail?

Most states allow retakes, often after a short waiting period. Check with your state licensing agency.

Are these the real test questions?

No. The federal question pool isn't public, states develop their own wording from it, and versions rotate. These are original questions covering the same federally required knowledge areas — which is what the real test is built from too.
