A pennant-shaped sign (a long horizontal triangle) on the LEFT side of the road means:
✓ No passing zone
The no-passing pennant is the only sign posted on the left side of the road, which is what makes it noticeable. It marks the beginning of a zone where passing is prohibited because sight distance is too short.
When roads are wet, you should:
✓ Reduce speed and increase following distance
Wet pavement lengthens stopping distance substantially, and the first rain after a dry spell lifts oil to the surface, making it slickest. Slow down and at least double your following distance. Never use cruise control on wet roads — it can accelerate through a patch of standing water.
Your brakes fail. Your first action should be:
✓ Pump the brake pedal to try to build pressure, then downshift and use the parking brake gradually
Pump the pedal — that can restore pressure in many systems. If it doesn't, shift to a lower gear to let the engine slow you, then apply the parking brake gradually while holding its release. Never shut off the engine (you lose power steering) or shift into park at speed.
