Your brakes fail. Your first action should be:

✓ Pump the brake pedal to try to build pressure, then downshift and use the parking brake gradually

Pump the pedal — that can restore pressure in many systems. If it doesn't, shift to a lower gear to let the engine slow you, then apply the parking brake gradually while holding its release. Never shut off the engine (you lose power steering) or shift into park at speed.

You are stopped at a red light and want to turn right. Unless a sign prohibits it, you may:

✓ Stop completely first, then turn when it's safe

Right turn on red is permitted in every state after a complete stop, unless a sign says otherwise — but the complete stop is the part people skip and get ticketed for. You must yield to pedestrians and cross traffic. Some cities, most famously New York City, prohibit it by default.

In Illinois, a driver under 21 caught with any trace of alcohol faces:

✓ License suspension under zero tolerance

Illinois zero tolerance means any trace at all. A first offense typically brings a three-month suspension; refusing testing brings a longer one.
