An eight-sided (octagonal) sign always means:
✓ Stop
The octagon is reserved for one message only: STOP. No other sign uses that shape, so you can identify it from behind or when it's covered in snow. You must come to a complete stop before the stop line, crosswalk, or intersection.
A downward-pointing triangle sign means:
✓ Yield
An inverted (upside-down) triangle is always YIELD. Slow down, be ready to stop, and let cross traffic or pedestrians go first. You only need to stop if traffic requires it.
A diamond-shaped sign tells you:
✓ A warning about conditions ahead
Diamonds are warning signs — they alert you to a hazard or change ahead (curve, merge, pedestrian crossing, slippery when wet). They're advisory about what's coming, not a law in themselves, but ignoring one is how crashes happen.
