Question 1

What this section covers

This test maps to the State laws and penalties section of the New York driver handbook. These are the questions that differ from every other state — the ones a generic practice test won't prepare you for. They're drawn from New York-specific handbook material.

The New York knowledge test is 20 questions, and you need 14 correct to pass.

Common questions

How many questions about state-specific laws are on the real test?

New York DMV doesn't publish a per-section breakdown, and it varies between exam forms. What's consistent is that signs and right-of-way carry the most weight on every state's exam — so if you're short on time, those are the two sections to over-prepare.

Do I have to get these exactly right on the real exam?

The exam samples from the whole handbook, so no single section decides it — but you can't offset a weak section forever. You may miss 6 questions in total on the New York exam.

Can I retake this practice test?

As many times as you like, free. Your progress saves automatically, so you can stop partway and come back to the same question later.
